Dear Overwhelmed New Mama

WE'VE MOVED!

I don't care how many kids you have, being the mom of a newborn is tough!

If the kids are old enough to help, then you've forgotten everything about babies and it's like being a first time parent all over again.

And if there are younger kids in the mix, it's like trying to nurse and at the same time herd cats that can talk back and throw tantrums at the worst possible moment.

Dear new mama,
Try to have grace for yourself.
You are not a SuperMom and you don't have to be.

Don't compare yourself with the Pinterest moms who only let you see the put-together moments.
That's not the woman your husband married.
That's not the Mom your kids love.
That's not the woman God created you to be.
Christ was perfect so that you don't have to be.

I promise that you will get the swing of things.
For me, it came slower than expected, but it did happen, and it will for you, too.
The house won't always be this messy.
The bank account won't always be overdrawn.
You won't always smell like rotten milk and spit up.
You won't always be sleep deprived.

...And you won't always have this little cuddly immobile slug who wants nothing more than to be snuggled by you.

The bad stuff will pass, mama.
...But so will the good.

Buy some paper plates, re-learn how to budget, find a new definition of "clean".
Even if you don't "sleep when the baby sleeps" at least enjoy the bonding time and let those dishes sit a while.

Things will get better, mama.

My hope for you is that when you look back at this crazy season of midnight feedings, sore nipples, and explosive blowout diapers, you won't think of the chaos, but instead you'll remember the quiet moments of your baby looking into your eyes while feeding.

You'll get through this, mama.

And some day you'll even wish to have it back.
Weird thought now, huh?

Won't you share your new mama story with us in the comments below?

It Takes A Village... To Raise Up A Woman

After writing some too-honest posts, I received an email from an acquaintance who I've met once or twice at our Sunday church gatherings.... Read the rest Signature26.com

Don't let the door hit you on the way out

You’ve made it past date three and you’re feeling the chemistry! But you’re noticing a few potential red flags.
I’m usually the person to lovingly say, “Get over yourself. Those aren’t red flags, they’re your preferences because you’re selfish. And since we can’t create a perfect SpouseBot for you, I suggest you knock it off before you find yourself forever alone.”
However, there are healthy boundaries that should be relationship deal breakers. Beware.

13 Relationship Deal Breakers

1. They’re rude to servers and are cheap tippers. If they’re demanding or belittling to a person they’ve just met, how are they going to treat you when things get tense? Frugality is to be admired, but giving the poor server who’s been on their feet for 12 hours a 14% tip is inconsiderate, and that will carry over into your relationship.
2. They don’t know how to forgive. When their ex come up in conversation, do they get angry? Resort to name calling? Retell stories of past offenses? Then they’re harboring unforgiveness. The ability to forgive is essential and if they don’t yet know how, you’re setting yourself up for future hurt.
3. They’re still living at home. A good relationship with one’s parents is to be admired. And Failure To Launch was a great movie. But if he’s 30, still living at home, and not Matthew McConaughey, go find a grownup. You are not SJP, so don’t try to fix him.
4. They’re perpetually unemployed and either loving it or whining about it but not doing anything to change it. If they’re unable to care for themselves, how are they going to support your future offspring if something were to happen to you?
5. They’re selfish. At first, it might be refreshing how decisive they are! But if they always need to have their own way, or get all agro or hurt feelings if things don’t go as they pictured, it’s a red flag. Communication and compromise are important to any thriving relationship.
6. They’re married. Don’t tell me they’re “technically separated.” Anything less than 100% legally, physically, territorially, and financially detached is still married. And if it’s been less than one calendar year, you’re just inviting drama and heartache into your life. Love yourself enough to walk away.
7. They’re drowning in debt. Money is still a leading cause of divorce, so if you’re not able to communicate about finances while you’re dating, this will not bode well for the marriage. A little student loan debt is understandable, but if all their electronic purchases are on credit cards, then they’re in need of financial coaching before you decide to commit. Taking a Financial Peace University class together will help you get on the same page.
Being in debt isn’t necessarily a deal breaker but not knowing how to fix it can be. If you’re drowning in debt, learn how to use debt consolidation and peer to peer lending to get back on your feet.
8. They don’t share your values. Tolerance is wonderful amongst friends, but when you’re committing to another person, foundational values have to be agreed upon. If the foundation is not stable, how will the home stand against a storm?
9. You’re split about kids. One of you wants them, one of you doesn’t. Stop wasting each other’s time, hanging around, hoping they’ll change their mind.
10. They don’t understand kids. Maybe you already have kids, but your honey has unrealistic expectations about what kids bring to the relationship. Parenting is a joy-filled, interruption-filled, 24/7 job and whoever you’re with needs to think it’s as worthwhile as you do! It doesn’t matter that those concert tickets cost $75 when you’re having to cancel to clean up vomit. It’s a nice thought if they want to give your kid their grandfather’s heirloom harmonica, but they can’t get pissed off when it falls out of their pocket at the park. Sometimes pants get peed in. Sometimes milk gets spilled. Sometimes the walls will have Cheese Puff handprints on them. Sometimes bad dreams happen and you suddenly have a child c-blocking you.
Find someone who already possesses the character to handle being part of your and your kid’s life. And I suggest not even introducing them to your kiddos until you’re sure they’re a keeper. You don’t want your kids remembering their childhood with a parade of your boy/girlfriends.
11. They cheat on you. Don’t stay with them hoping they’ll change their ways once you’re married. Integrity is an essential attribute if there’s to be trust in a marriage and it doesn’t suddenly present itself once you say, “I do.”
12. They have a substance abuse problem or a gambling problem. Someone in recovery isn’t even supposed to enter into a romantic relationship for a whole year. Give them time. You’re not their rescuer.
13. There’s abuse. Any sort of physical, emotional, sexual, or spiritual abuse, including but not limited to control, manipulation, date rape, and coercion to have an abortion, should not be tolerated. If you’re the one doing the abusing, get away from your target and seek help for yourself. If you’re the one being abused, don’t hang around hoping they’ll change, or thinking that you can fix them. You’ll just be dragged down with them. Seek help from someone you trust or by calling a hotline.
Simply defined, relationship deal breakers are anything you wouldn’t want your adult child putting up with in a relationship.

Rewarded For Bad Behavior

Imagine:
A sixteen year old girl finds herself pregnant.
Against the advice and demands of the baby daddy, her friends, and even her family, she chooses to raise this child.
The organization Embrace Grace throws this frightened, brave, young girl a baby shower.

"Why in the world would you want to reward them for their bad behavior?"

"We really want to be careful about this and how it might be perceived as honoring girls that have sinned."

I posted an article on Facebook called "How Pro-Life Are You?" by Amy Ford. A dear friend commented on the article and I was so shocked and saddened by her response that I realized this was going to take more than a short comment -- This was so important that it would require an entire blog post.

Here's what my good friend wrote:
"Did the father of the prodigal son reward his son for his bad choices? No, he showed him love - lots of love - and let his son live with the consequences (ie: no more inheritance). Same here."

“If your preaching of the gospel of God's free grace in Jesus Christ does not provoke the charge from some of antinomianism, you're not preaching the gospel of the free grace of God in Jesus Christ.”
-David Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Sticking with the Tale of Two Sons parable, the father was willing to make himself undignified by running toward his son! He told the servants to put the best robe on him, which was probably his very own, symbolizing acceptance back into the family, to enjoy living off of what's left of his father's wealth -- to freely enjoy his brother's half of the inheritance.

Tim Keller writes in Prodigal God, "The father is saying, "I'm not going to wait until you've paid off your debt; I'm not going to wait until you've duly groveled. You are not going to earn your way back into the family, I am going to simply take you back. I will cover your nakedness, poverty, and rags with the robes of my office and honor."

The feast was with the fattened calf -- the most expensive celebratory meal possible, which the whole town was probably invited to. This is part of why the older brother is so pissed!

When older bro arrives and sees the party his father is throwing, with HIS half of the inheritance, mind you, he refuses to join, shaming his father and demonstrating to everyone that he does NOT condone what his father is doing.

But with the same love and grace he had shown to his younger son, Dad leaves the party to seek out his oldest son and begs him to come in and help welcome his lost younger brother back home.

But older bro is still way pissed off and continues to humiliate his father. "I've been perfect for you all these years! But he wished you dead and blew your money on whores! You've never thrown me a party like this, but now that he's back you treat him not only like a son again, but like royalty! What the hell, Dad??"

Treating his father like that, the father would have to save face by disowning him immediately. But Tim Keller writes the father's heart response, "My son, despite how you have insulted me publicly, I still want you in the feast. I am not going to disown your brother, but I don't want to disown you, either. I challenge you to swallow your pride and come into the feast. The choice is yours. Will you, or will you not?"

... And that's the cliffhanger ending...
We're left wondering what the older brother will do!

Now let's apply this story of the two sons to these teenage girls and the folks who don't want to "reward them for their bad behavior."

These girls have made decisions that they're told in health class are acceptable and normal. But they've been lied to -- sex has real, life-altering consequences! And rather than go the socially acceptable and government sponsored route of abortion, they have done the most unselfish thing a young unmarried girl can do, which is to accept responsibility of the life growing within her.

These "younger brothers", if you will, are boldly choosing life for their babies. This selfless choice should be praised, honored, and celebrated! Not judged and condemned by the "older brothers".

It's no wonder so many girls prefer a secret abortion to open ridicule and judgement.

Have we forgotten that the wages of ANY sin is death?
That we are ALL deserving of death and separation from God forever?
And yet we DO enjoy the inheritance of the Son.
We ARE rewarded, in spite of our bad behavior.
While we are STILL sinners Christ died for us.
I thank God that I don't get what I know I deserve.

Because of the work Christ did on the cross, dying in our place, defeating death and rising again, our Father will NOT disown these girls. And although His Gospel of Free Grace has been insulted by the judgement that has been poured out on these girls, our Father doesn't want to disown you either. I challenge you to swallow your pride and come into the feast to celebrate life with these young mothers.

"The choice is yours," Says the Father, "Will you, or will you not?"

Timothy Keller: "Jesus, the True Elder Brother"

How does "The Pill" work as an abortifacient?

A Not-So-Happy Mother's Day

"Praying for women struggling with infertility, miscarriage, and infant loss this Mother's Day.

Today is Mother's Day. I got to sleep in until 10am and then facebooked in bed until 11.
Someone else made my coffee for me and there's bacon and cinnamon rolls in the oven that I didn't put there.

This is my first Mother's Day since having Ellie, making me the Mom of three girls...
...But in my heart I'm the Mom of four girls.

So while I want to honor all mothers and grandmothers in the traditional sense, I also want to recognize all the people who don't find Mother's Day such a happy occasion.

Your Grandmother, Mother, or a mother figure has passed away, maybe not even getting to meet your little ones.
You're a Father who has to play the role of Father and Mother to your youngsters.
You're estranged from your children, or from your Mother.
God has given you a mother's heart, but no children of your own.
You've struggled with infertility, mourning every month.
You're a Mom or Mother figure who didn't carry your baby in your womb.
You've suffered through the loss of a child.
You've carried a life inside your body, but never got to meet your baby.
You've carried a life inside your body... and regret choosing abortion. I sense that you might need to hear that guilt is not from God. He offers forgiveness and hope and mercy for you.

And a hundred other scenarios that would make this day a painful one that drives you away from facebook so you won't have to read all the "Happy Mother's Day" posts.

This isn't how it's supposed to be.
We live in a world that has chosen to fall away from God, allowing pain and death in.

But Christ came and died and defeated death forever so that one day everything will be as it's supposed to be.
One day He will wipe away every tear from your eyes and you won't feel the pain and sorrow you do now.

All The Single Ladies

Rule #1 if you insist on reading past this point: Don't get pissed.

Don't become defensive and have an argument in your head with me, or worse - go into a rage and write a comment full of colorful expletives for all to see. If one of these categories really gets under your skin, chances are that it's because it hit a nerve and I hope you pray on it.

You've been warned.
Proceed at your own risk:

Does it seem like everyone around you is getting married and having babies and you secretly (or not so secretly) hope that you'll be next?

Small problem: You're still single!

You could keep telling yourself that you just haven't found the right one who appreciates you for you...
Or we can take an objective peek at why you might still be single so that when a good man comes along, you won't get in your own way and miss out on the love of your life.

1. Are you a woman who knows what she wants? 6' tall, dark hair, six figure income, marathon runner. No matter how long or short your laundry list of must-haves is, you'll never fully appreciate a man for who God created him to be if you're busy comparing him to your list. NIX THE LIST. The only things on your list should be their character and their values. When his values align with yours and his character is worthy of respect, you might have found a catch!

2. As a modern single woman, you're at the center of your own universe. It doesn't matter how many critters call you "mama", or how often you volunteer at the soup kitchen. Your world revolves around you. Your career, your workout schedule, your sleep. You can't help it, YOU'RE SELFISH. In fact, even if you think you're NOT selfish, marriage (and then motherhood!) will prove otherwise. I promise. Try being more interrupt-able. Stop being so fascinating and try listening more, talking less, and asking more questions.

3. Do you have a very strong or dominant personality? Are you passionate about politics or a cause? Are you really great at setting firm boundaries? Are you highly intelligent and enjoy debating or sharing opinions? Chances are, men are mistaking those qualities for ANGER. Try to tone it down a bit. Don't play dumb or compromise healthy boundaries, but try adding a little sweetness and humility to your tone and see how it goes.

4. There's not really a delicate way to put this: STOP HOOKING UP. Oxytocin is the enemy. Google it. When you give yourself physically, even if you're not going "all the way", Oxytocin makes you think the jerk you're making out with is your Prince Charming. Before marriage, sex is your secret weapon: When you tell him that you want to wait and he respects your choice, he's a prince. Even if he's not YOUR prince, the man deserves your respect. On the other hand, if he keeps pushing a little further, or if he gets all aggro when you say stop, the guy's an ass. Save yourself future heartache and move on, honey.

5. The guy you're goo-goo for doesn't want a relationship but he's fine with a booty call and you're all like, "yeah, me too", hoping he'll see the awesomeness of you and you'll be the one to make him change his mind. First of all, STOP LYING TO YOURSELF, and to him. Second, see #4 above. Oxytocin, baby. Seriously, go Google it.

6. Maybe you're making minimum wage, trying to land a doctor. Maybe you're 40, trying to attract a twentysomething. You rely on public transportation, but want a man who drives a car... preferably a new, shiny one. Sweetie, I suggest you stop being a JUDGMENTAL HYPOCRITE and start looking at the man's character qualities instead of the superficial.

7. Are you trying to MARRY UP? I know that might sound harsh, but why are you looking for someone who isn't your equal? You don't need someone with a better job, higher income, better looking, or more fit. You need the right fit for YOU. Stop being a fish trying to marry a bird. Chances are, you're overlooking the perfect fish for you while you're busy trying to keep your scales from showing. You ARE good enough. Just the way you are - for the right guy. Find someone who will see that and bring out the best in you.

Was I too hard?
Don't be mad.
I hope you understand my heart is for you to find the love of your life, and to live happily ever after with him.
If a little tough love has to happen in order for you to have your happy beginning, then so be it.
Now go find you a prince!
